Kutakuinkin näin kaikki alkoi.
Kutakuinkin näin kaikki alkoi.
Loppiainen 2012. Tv:sta taustamelua, musiikkia Teemalta.
Joku oopperakonsertti. Iso orkesteri. Tummakutrinen laulajatar lavalla. Hmm..
ei paha! Ei riivi korvia, kuten korkeat naisäänet minulla yleensä. Varmaankin kuuluisa, yleisö aploderaa innokkaasti. Jaahas, joku mieslaulaja seuraavana. No mutta, kukas
hän on!?! Onpa upea ääni! Tämähän täytyy tarkistaa.
Konsertti oli nauhoitus Berliinin Waldbühnen lavalta edelliseltä
kesältä. Esiintyjinä sopraano Anna Netrebko, tenori Jonas Kaufmann sekä
bassobaritoni Erwin Shrott.
Siinä se tapahtui, hurahdukseni. Pim! kuin taikasauvan
kilahduksesta, bibidi-babidi-buu.
Jo on tenoria siunattu komealla äänellä! Tummahko, sointuva,

This is the story of how I got lost in the world of opera / was awakened by opera music / got bitten by an opera bug.. which ever way you want to put it. Been swept away like that musically is nothing new for me, it has happened before, with different genres, though. This time it seems there is indication of a more severe case in the air.. ;)
Just about like this it all begun.
It was the Epiphany 2012. At home. TV blasting in the background. Music. An opera concert. Grande orchestra. A brunette soprano onstage. Hmm, not bad. Not earsplitting, as high female voices often for me are. Must be famous. The audience gets wild. Ok, now there's a guy.. Oh my, who's he!!?! What a voice! This I must check.
The concert was a rerun of a recording from the Berlin Waldbühne from previous summer. The stars onstage were soprano Anna Netrebko, tenor Jonas Kaufmann and bass baritone Erwin Schrott.
There it was, the fateful whirl. Bim! Like a swish of a magic wand, bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. I was lost.
The further I watched the concert, the more fascinated I was. Wonderful to hear singers who so clearly know what they are doing. Powerful, emotional, enjoyable interpretations. And what's more, great songs! Exotic southern flavour, glorious tangos sung by a deep, dark voice (Schrott). And what a bandoneon soloist (or was it an accordion?)!! Gorrrrgeous Netrebko-Kaufmann love duet (the St. Sulpice scene from Manon by Massenet) with passionate smooching and all ("it's just acting", she commented ;)). Tearjerkingly beautiful O mio babbino caro (link to 2006 performance, the right one didn't work). Memorable performances by the orchestra and choir as well, especially the sorrowful humming chorus from Madame Butterfly. As the night grew darker, Kaufmann's romantic Du bist die Welt für mich went down a storm. The camera even caught some sweet hugging couples in the audience. Awww! The set and scenery in Waldbühne is lavish, an amphitheater in the middle of nature, surrounded by beautiful landscape. One might think that on such a large open air stage the performers would be minuscule figures out there, not really interacting, but no, on the contrary, the atmosphere was a really warm one, relaxed and jovial. The audience was receptive and applauded the stars heartily. The crown of a great evening was a majestic rendering of Lehar's Freunde, das Leben ist lebenswert by Kaufmann. Thunderous Bravos and roaring applauding!
Now there's a tenor who's been blessed with a glorious voice! Darkish, sonorous, rich in hues, powerful but soft, delicate and tender if need be. A perfect instrument for the stage, interpreting characters. Great emotional abilities and, it seems, a willingness to set oneself aside, to plunge into the mind and frame of a character.. judging by a concert performance only. Such a treat I must see and hear more!
There was more, on the very evening, namely Carmen - the opera.
